The North Portland Winter Gift and Food Drive

Picture of Tables Bearing GiftsThe North Portland Winter Gift and Food Drive is an event of the Caring Community of North Portland ("CCNP"), a small non-profit that has no paid staff and an all-volunteer board.

This year the Winter Gift and Food Drive served 215 families, all of whom received gifts for all the children in their household, a holiday food box, and a $10 gift certificate to Target. In total 957 people received gifts and of those 742 were children. We are honored to support families, during what can be a stressful time of year, by giving them the opportunity to pick toys and gifts that are the best fit for their own children's needs and tastes.

Giving TreeThese families were referred from the Multnomah County Touchstone Program in the following North Portland Schools: Sitton Elementary, James John Elementary, George Middle, Clarendon Elementary, Portsmouth Middle, Peninsula Elementary, and Beach Elementary Schools. The families were screened by the Touchstone Program for level of need and history with accessing other holiday programs. Families with the highest need and with no history of accessing other holiday resources were prioritized in regards to which families were served.

CCNP in partnership with the Touchstone Program and James John Elementary set up a "Holiday Store." At the store parents selected one gift per child in their household and a gift for themselves. The family also received a substantial holiday food box. The Holiday Store was open December 19 - 20, 2005 for approximately 10 hours per day to accommodate a variety of families' schedules.
